Trust
I recently read a book that opened my eyes up to the number one dysfunction in the workplace, the community, and the family. One dysfunction which can be overcome and yet few if any are taking the steps to make the difference. Now for those who know me they will expect I would say the dysfunction is leadership. Leadership in the workplace, leadership in the community and leadership in the family (yes, the most important leadership role starts in the family). The dysfunction is a dysfunction found in leadership and follower relationships and that dysfunction is the lack of trust.
Over the past while I have working through an empirical study on the subject of trust and like leadership there is years of studies that all same the same thing, trust is the key to all relationships including the family, leadership, high performing teams, and organizations; trust is the key.
Trust is a two-way street that takes all parties to participate and can be seen in the simple formula.
Trusting + Trustworthiness = Trust
Trust or the lack of it creates conflict, inferior performance, and chaos and it shows up in:
- Lack of transparency
- Inconsistent behavior
- Broken promises
- Poor communication
- Lack of responsibility and accountability – there is a difference.
- Bias and favoritism
- High turnover rates including ‘quiet resignation.’
- Fear of retaliation
- Inadequate conflict resolution
- Cultural misalignment
- Unmet expectations
- Vulnerability
- Technology issues
- Limited engagement
